The Notorious D.M.V.

January 25th, 2008

There’s just so much to say about the wonderful place of standing in lines, listening to babies cry and wail, and waiting for your alphanumeric code to be called so you can just get a new picture taken because the last one looked like hell.

Whilst cruising the website looking for the phone number directory in order to make an appointment for a written test (because I am one of those losers above the age of twenty without a license), I noticed a link for a “Driving Knowledge Tutorial.” They capitalized each word themselves, by the way. What intrigued me was the note that it was only for those with high speed internet access, so I clicked the link and was brought to a page telling me about their cool and hip Macromedia Flash tutorial and listed off a list of system requirements. Actually, it’s only one system requirement and it was the necessity of having flash 5 installed. Also, a second ‘warning’ is issued about not using dial-up while loading the program because it’s just so hefty it could take twenty minutes for it to load.

Let me tell you something. Back in the day when I had a dial-up modem, I was playing flash games that were more complex than this shoddy mess of pixels and text. It’s pretty easy to pass; the pictures help indefinitely, no matter how MS Paint-like the art is.

Below the cut are some examples of the artwork that can be found in this fine example of online skill preparation.

Blowchella

January 21st, 2008

Music historians will mark 2008 as the year The Coachella Music and Arts Festival finally, brazenly, unquestionably jumped the motherfucking shark. Even pitchfork, the frothing-at-their-indie-mouths champions of the festival that takes place in Re:Generator’s backyard is filled with the generous spirit of meh.

We’ve been seeing cracks in the facade for years, but adding Madonna to roster in 2006 was the first real sign of trouble. While it seemed at the time like it was “taking Coachella to the next level” or some other tired industry jargon, what Madge’s going-through-the-motions half-hour dance routine indeed signaled was that the festival was now banking on mediocre acts and nostalgia as the big draw, not introducing the America music aficionado, unused to European-style mega-festivals, to a diverse range of up-and-coming underground artists. The aforementioned mediocrity and nostalgia really has been “taken to the next level” in ought-eight. Initial reactions after the jump.

Re:Generator baby

Congratulations to our own Ryan Jovian and the irreplaceable Sarah Gonzales, who was birthin’ from Wednesday afternoon until late last night.

Ganon Thomas Finegan will no doubt be spoiled by Re:Generator’s menagerie of moral degenerates and enemy combatants.
