Gay marriage ban overturned

May 15th, 2008

Gay marriage

Congratulations to gay rights activists who have fought for the right to marry in California.

I can honestly say I’ve never been prouder to be a Californian.

Developing…

Update #1: The California Supreme Court’s Opinion, in .Doc and .PDF.

Update #2: Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will not stand in the way of the Supreme Court’s ruling:

“I respect the Court’s decision and as Governor, I will uphold its ruling. Also, as I have said in the past, I will not support an amendment to the constitution that would overturn this state Supreme Court ruling.”

Update #3: Meet the culture warriors who want to deny gay couples the chance to ruin their lives together:

the initiative to strike down their ruling has already gathered over a million signatures and is just waiting for verification from the Secretary of State before it goes on the November ballot. It’s 14 words long, identical to the wording of Prop 22 back in 2000: “Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.” This time, however, it’s a constitutional initiative, not a statutory initiative, so if it passes it will be immune to court challenges.

Ah, another important reason for Californians to clog voting booths in November. I wonder if this will change the voting dynamic much.

Update #4: Pfft, Nancy Pelosi acts like she represents San Francisco or something.

The Pope in America

April 21st, 2008

The Pope with Dubya.
Pope Benny makes a visit.

Yesterday Pope Benedict XVI ended his first visit to the United States. One of the many messages he brought to this side of the ocean was his insistence on the improvement of equal rights.

The Vatican expressed concern over the treatment of Saddam Hussein during the former dictator’s trial and execution, calling it “tragic and reason for sadness.” Following the hanging of Hussein the pope insisted that people cannot be treated as objects. During his audience with the U.N., he stressed a revision of our outlook on human rights was what the world needed most.

This comes from the same man who sees gay adoption as a form of violence against children.

I understand that he’s the Pope, and that he can’t suddenly swing the church from right to left. Having said that, it’s 2008 and the world is changing. If the church wants to stay relevant to the world, then it has to change with it. Let’s hope that the Pope, who not surprisingly has decried homosexuals as unnatural, takes his own advice and learns to respect all of us.

The McGreeveys’ skeevy secrets

March 17th, 2008

Scandalicious.

Plausible deniability is the last refuge of the political wife whose husband’s career has been cast upon the rocks of public sexual humiliation. “I didn’t know Eliot was barebacking prostitutes for the last six years,” one wife might convey through a tightly pursed lip. “David certainly never displayed a proclivity for wearing diapers in our bedroom,” another unfortunate member of the governor’s wives club might confide behind closed doors. And if you’re former New Jersey first lady Dina Matos McGreevey, part of the rationale for filing divorce papers is the plaintive “I didn’t know Jim was gay.”

But what if she did know Jim was gay? And what if the shocking revelations came to light at the worst possible time, when a national news media desperate to talk about something other than the Obama/Hillary deathmatch had bloodied the waters with New York’s whorehopping Guv’ner for the past week? Then news about the elections in Iran and Gen. Petraeus’ admission the goal of the surge has not been met is edged out by titalating tabloid-grade reportage like this:

A former driver and aide for former N.J. Gov. Jim McGreevey says Dina Matos McGreevey must have always known her husband was gay - because he was the other man in bed with them.

In an explosive interview with The Post, the McGreeveys’ longtime man-in-the-middle, Teddy Pedersen, recounted explicit details of alleged, titillating, three-way sex romps he had with the now-divorcing duo, starting during their courtship and continuing into the marriage.

Pedersen - who said he has already spilled the beans on the steamy ménage a trios arrangement under oath in a deposition for the couple’s divorce battle - hinted that he thinks his presence was required to get Jim’s motor running for Dina.

If the news media is ever going to fix their gaze upon the stories that really matter, illicit nookie is going to have to be worked in the framework somehow.

The gay ex-stripper never stood a chance

March 13th, 2008

If you’re going to be gay on American Idol, you have to be deeply, chronically repressed like Clay Aiken. Even then, Aiken came in second to Ruben “What the hell is he doing now?” Studdard.

Don’t firewall with Texas II

February 19th, 2008

It remains to be seen if Hillary Clinton can slow Barack Obama’s momentum with a victory tonight in Wisconsin’s open primary, but the second poll in two days to show Obama within striking distance of the Clintons in Texas is making the rounds:

Depending on Hispanic Turnout, Clinton is Either Slightly Ahead, or Not so Slightly Ahead, in Texas Democratic Primary: In a Democratic Primary in Texas today, 02/18/08, 15 days to the vote, Hillary Clinton leads Barack Obama 50% to 45%, according to a SurveyUSA poll … BUT: there is “give” in these numbers that must be mentioned in the same breath. Among Hispanic voters, Clinton leads 2:1. SurveyUSA estimates that Hispanics make-up 32% of Democratic primary voters in a Primary today. If Hispanics vote in larger numbers, Clinton’s lead is larger than the 5 points shown here. If Hispanics vote in smaller numbers, Obama runs stronger than these numbers show.

With everything to lose, Hillary is waging full-scale warfare against her preternaturally calm opponent. On the advice of her own Karl Rove, Mark Penn, Hillary is going after one of Obama’s greatest strengths: his oratory.

First, she de-emphasized the power of speeches… while giving a speech. Oy. Next, she pointed out that Obama and one of his biggest supporters, Gov. Deval Patrick of Massachusetts, share the same speechwriter and thus phraseology. Only, when she pointed it out, it sounded like a panicked candidate screaming “Plagiarist! Plagiarist!”

If this latest round of attacks doesn’t help the Clinton campaign as much as Hillary is hoping, there’s always the sleazy, underhanded and stark raving mad approach. It’s certainly easier than actually being ready on day one. The man below shouldn’t be too hard to locate and appropriate. He is, after all, telling the whole world Obama smoked crack and let the guy blow him.

C’mon! If Obama really smoked crack and let a man fellate him, he’d at least be a little more handsome… and coherent. Does this guy always dress like he picks up trash on the side of the road with a chain gang?
