Lost in the hustle and bustle of the last few days was the passing of Mildred Loving. It’s a name few are familiar with, but one that had an indelible impact on the social fabric of the United States. Mildred Loving was a black woman from Virginia with no great political or societal aspirations. She just happened to marry Richard Loving, a white man, in a time and a place where it was not only frowned upon, it was outlawed.
She became pregnant a few years later, she and Loving got married in Washington in 1958, when she was 18. Mildred told the AP she didn’t realize it was illegal. “I think my husband knew,” Mildred said. “I think he thought (if) we were married, they couldn’t bother us.”
But they were arrested a few weeks after they returned to Central Point, their hometown in rural Caroline County north of Richmond. They pleaded guilty to charges of “cohabiting as man and wife, against the peace and dignity of the Commonwealth,” according to their indictments.

But Marilyn Monroe had the sex. Orally. And during the 1960s too, which, as historians will tell you, was completely sex-free until ‘66. She may have even enjoyed it. But, like many in the MySpace Generation, she made the mistake of doing it on camera with someone who may or may not have been a Kennedy. Unlike today, when it would have been leaked onto the internet and made her even more famous, the FBI got a hold of it and guarded it, for, er, safekeeping by classifying it. Not before the informant made a copy, though. One thing hasn’t changed over the years. Porn is still porn, which means the collector who just purchased the 16MM reel paid way too much for it.

President Bush explains the Unified Field Theory to the White House press corps. Notice the lack of sock puppets.
President George W. Bush is America’s worst Top Motherfucker ever. Now, before you accuse me of some kind of liberal bias or living only on a diet consisting of aborted fetuses and granola, this isn’t my opinion but that of 61% of historians according to a recent poll. Also, 81% of the country believes that the country is on the wrong track, and dammit, Cheney, Bush & co. are in the White House, and the Democrats and Republicans in the Congress don’t give a fuck.
Meanwhile in Pennsylvania, Clinton and Obama are tied neck and neck at 45% with the primaries coming up on the 22nd of April. I don’t know if they care what you (or 61% of historians) think about Bush and the direction of the country, but you can sure as hell bet they are going to tell you what you want to hear, and whisper sweet nothings in your ear in their bid to proved they can do a better job as America’s Next Top Motherfucker.

Former presidential candidate and New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson has broken his self-imposed silence on the Barack Obama/Hillary Clinton race, throwing his public support behind the Senator from Illinois. The corpulent ogre of the Clinton camp, Mark Penn, downplayed the significance of Gov. Richardson’s endorsement:
“Look, I think that everyone has their endorsers,” said senior Clinton strategist Mark Penn, adding–with a little huff–“I think New Mexico is a state that actually, we won.”
“The time that he could have been effective has long since passed,” he continued, “I don’t think it is a significant endorsement in this environment.”
Make no mistake, the symbolism is potent. Richardson is the nation’s most prominent Latino politician, a demographic Obama has struggled to pull away from the Clintons in past primaries. Richardson was also a high-ranking member of the Clinton White House, first as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and then as the U.S. Secretary of Energy. He is also a prominent superdelegate.
The Governor’s guiding principle behind biting his tongue was misguided personal loyalty to former president Clinton. Richardson publicly acknowledged he was torn between Hillary and Barack: he knew the former but was excited by the possibilities of the later. Bill Clinton even attempted to court Richardson’s backing during Super Bowl Sunday.
So what was the tipping point? Was it something Clinton did, or something Obama did to push him to commit? If it was Clinton, which negative attack crossed the line for him? If it was Obama, was it his historic, groundbreaking, additional hyperbolic adjectives speech on racial relations? For all we know, it might have been the compliment Obama gave Bill about the super sweet goatee he grew after dropping out of the race. No man is without vanity.
