What’s Generation X’s beef with Millennials?

May 16th, 2008

Generation X

At least one Gen Xer has had it up to here with these newfangled twentysomethings. And who is he to call these upstarts whiners? Admittedly, my memories of the early nineties are incomplete, but what foggy recollections I can coax out of my long term memory make the unfortunate participants of the Bataan Death March seem optimistic in contrast. Does irony and sarcasm corrode one’s soul? The possibility is sobering.

Gay marriage ban overturned

May 15th, 2008

Gay marriage

Congratulations to gay rights activists who have fought for the right to marry in California.

I can honestly say I’ve never been prouder to be a Californian.

Developing…

Update #1: The California Supreme Court’s Opinion, in .Doc and .PDF.

Update #2: Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will not stand in the way of the Supreme Court’s ruling:

“I respect the Court’s decision and as Governor, I will uphold its ruling. Also, as I have said in the past, I will not support an amendment to the constitution that would overturn this state Supreme Court ruling.”

Update #3: Meet the culture warriors who want to deny gay couples the chance to ruin their lives together:

the initiative to strike down their ruling has already gathered over a million signatures and is just waiting for verification from the Secretary of State before it goes on the November ballot. It’s 14 words long, identical to the wording of Prop 22 back in 2000: “Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.” This time, however, it’s a constitutional initiative, not a statutory initiative, so if it passes it will be immune to court challenges.

Ah, another important reason for Californians to clog voting booths in November. I wonder if this will change the voting dynamic much.

Update #4: Pfft, Nancy Pelosi acts like she represents San Francisco or something.

Kids these days

May 15th, 2008

World of Warcraft

With their Fritos and their Oreos and their Dr. Pepper and their World of Warcraft and their Halo and their stolen credit cards and their hookers

The escort girls who were released without charge, told the arresting officers something was up when the kids said they would rather play Xbox than get down to business.

Now that’s just financially irresponsible.

Gitmo is about to get ROCKED

May 15th, 2008

Everclear

Has-been rockers Everclear will be playing a concert for the troops stationed at Guantanamo Bay. What could be better for the America’s first semipublic gulag (other than putting a stop to the torture and denial of basic legal rights, both stains on America’s legacy; or getting a new interior decorator; or closing the prison down altogether)?

Everclear frontman Art Alexakis has always been considered something of an archdouche, but the Gitmo concert is one act of douchery too far. Perhaps after Everclear drops by Cuba, they can embark on a three-month tour of black sites across the world, actually becoming complicit in torture by performing 24 hour long sets to deprive detainees of sleep. And once Alexakis is taught how to waterboard, he’s never going to want to leave.

Scaring the Piss Out of You: Deportation

May 15th, 2008

Miniluv has reached a new low, what with sedating deportees with pre-flight, antipsychotic “cocktails” before shipping immigrants off to countries of origin. Not scaring the piss out of you? Let me ask you, if our government is treating immigrants who have failed to achieve legal status like subhumans, how long before people with debt, or on welfare, or in some other way “leeching off our country” are treated equally as bad? How long before it happens to someone you love? How long are you willing to wait to see what happens next?
