Gay marriage ban overturned

May 15th, 2008

Gay marriage

Congratulations to gay rights activists who have fought for the right to marry in California.

I can honestly say I’ve never been prouder to be a Californian.

Developing…

Update #1: The California Supreme Court’s Opinion, in .Doc and .PDF.

Update #2: Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will not stand in the way of the Supreme Court’s ruling:

“I respect the Court’s decision and as Governor, I will uphold its ruling. Also, as I have said in the past, I will not support an amendment to the constitution that would overturn this state Supreme Court ruling.”

Update #3: Meet the culture warriors who want to deny gay couples the chance to ruin their lives together:

the initiative to strike down their ruling has already gathered over a million signatures and is just waiting for verification from the Secretary of State before it goes on the November ballot. It’s 14 words long, identical to the wording of Prop 22 back in 2000: “Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.” This time, however, it’s a constitutional initiative, not a statutory initiative, so if it passes it will be immune to court challenges.

Ah, another important reason for Californians to clog voting booths in November. I wonder if this will change the voting dynamic much.

Update #4: Pfft, Nancy Pelosi acts like she represents San Francisco or something.

Gitmo is about to get ROCKED

May 15th, 2008

Everclear

Has-been rockers Everclear will be playing a concert for the troops stationed at Guantanamo Bay. What could be better for the America’s first semipublic gulag (other than putting a stop to the torture and denial of basic legal rights, both stains on America’s legacy; or getting a new interior decorator; or closing the prison down altogether)?

Everclear frontman Art Alexakis has always been considered something of an archdouche, but the Gitmo concert is one act of douchery too far. Perhaps after Everclear drops by Cuba, they can embark on a three-month tour of black sites across the world, actually becoming complicit in torture by performing 24 hour long sets to deprive detainees of sleep. And once Alexakis is taught how to waterboard, he’s never going to want to leave.

Guess who just got shortlisted for the Dem VP slot?

May 14th, 2008

OMG Edwards

Remember that white guy who wasn’t Obama or Hillary and was all like “Blah blah blah poverty”? We laughed and laughed, because poverty is for poor people who don’t love Jesus enough for him to reward them monetarily. He didn’t do so well at the polls and dropped out before Super Tuesday (the first one, not Super Tuesday XLII). But as 2008 began to not look so 2000gr8t and the scales were lifted from our eyes, we finally saw the “Two Americas” Mr. Haircut was always blathering on about. It turns out that rich people live differently than those impoverished Christ deniers.

Then again, Edwards is obscenely rich himself, which always struck some quarters as hypocritical, because only the disenfranchised who no one will listen to are allowed to tell the truth about the class system in America. That way, nothing ever changes, except the digs on Cribs get ever swankier. Others, like myself, were frustrated that he wouldn’t endorse, then hoped he wouldn’t endorse, then said if he endorsed now it wouldn’t mean much because he squandered his chance, and finally stopped caring. Which is exactly when John Edwards endorsed Barack Obama.

The endorsement was far from a sure thing. John and Elizabeth Edwards famously got in an argument with Obama over universal health care in a private meeting after he withdrew and reportedly thought Obama wasn’t forceful enough to overcome George Clinton. Edwards met privately with both candidates, and at one time was rumored to be endorsing Clinton. But now that the Democratic race is effectively over (to the point where even NARAL is casting their lot with O) and VP talk has begun, Edwards is utterly convinced… that he can use his kingmaker status to shut the door on Clinton and lay the groundwork that will allow him to be a heartbeat away from the presidency. He wants first dibs on Cheney’s man-sized safes.

Fahrenheit 9/11 sequel to show Bush is still not a very good person

May 14th, 2008

Michael Moore is a big, fat idiot

A sequel to Fahrenheit 9/11 isn’t necessary.

It’s 2008, not 2004, and the minority of Americans who think president George W. Bush is doing a heckuva job aren’t going to be convinced by another Michael Moore documentary attacking him. Most won’t be aware it’s out, and those who do know won’t bother to see it.

What good will it do, then? The Left’s Rush Limbaugh equivalent wasted half of the first Fahrenheit 9/11 on spurious arguments and guilt-by-association conflation when there was ample solid material Moore could have focused on. Bush isn’t up for reelection, and although the economy is faltering, Bush alone doesn’t shoulder that burden of responsibility.

Instead of another hit piece on Bush, why doesn’t Moore focus his anger on Alan Greenspan? He can show what the former Chairman of the Federal Reserve’s disastrous deregulation policies did to - you guessed it - his hometown of Flint, Michigan.

The easiest primary night ever

May 13th, 2008

The polls have closed in West Virginia, and Re:Generator Magazine is calling the race for George Clinton with 0% precincts reporting and 0% of the votes counted. Some other media outlets too, but we gave our qualified declaration first. Swear.

One point of contention:

Obama looked ahead to the Oregon primary later in the month and the general election campaign against Republican John McCain, but the defeat underscored his weakness among blue collar voters who will be pivotal in the fall. [Emphasis added]

The numbers don’t paint such a stark picture:

It’s fair for the Obama camp to point out that he doesn’t do significantly worse against McCain among working-class whites than Clinton does, and that he does better with their upscale counterparts. And Obama’s numbers are nothing like John Kerry’s and Al Gore’s; they lost working-class whites to George W. Bush by 24 points and 17 points, respectively.

But then Al Gore and John Kerry never had their patriotism questioned… erm… they never, uh… were half-black? That is Clinton’s sole rationale for remaining in the race, right?
