Steel, glass and concrete

Portland, Oregon — Though it may be a bohemian mecca in an uneasy alliance with nature, no metropolitan area Portland’s size could be sustainable without industry.

O Snap: Taking art to the streets

April 1st, 2008

Murally mural is murally.

Portland, Oregon — At its best, art is an act of creation with the potential to subtly transform the surrounding environs, be they mental or physical. A work of art on a busy street, then, expands upon the potential: where most art must be sought out by individuals already so inclined, a mural like the wall graffiti on SE Belmont can be passively viewed again and again, with greater effect upon landscapes inward and out.

O Snap: What urban sprawl?

Understanding zombies

February 29th, 2008

Most 10-year-olds can tell you that zombies are the living dead, that they are usually slow moving but relentless, and that they hunger for human flesh (a side effect of this is that their bite transforms their victims into zombies themselves). But as a society, have we ever shown curiosity about their postmortem hopes and dreams? Hell, have we even bothered to find out what they like?

That’s why I’m glad Portland’s News Channel 8 took the initiative to explore the zombie psyche on live television:

You know what? I like them as well. Maybe the differences between humans and zombies aren’t insurmountable after all…
