The Book Was Better: The NeverEnding Story

March 27th, 2008

The NeverEnding Story

My sister got me the movie The NeverEnding Story for my birthday this year. I have loved this movie since I was knee high, but all that I could think of while watching it was that the book is so much better. Even though both the movie and the book are old school, I thought I would write a “The Book Was Better” on them because so few people actually know that the book exists.

The NeverEnding Story is the story of a world created on fantasy, imagination, and wishes. The boundless lands of Fantastica (or Fantasia for you movie folk), with all of their wonder and adventure; filled with curious creatures and amazing people. It is Wonderland, it is Oz, it is Narnia, it is Slumberland; it is everything you have ever dreamed. It is also one of the most amazingly well-written and creative fantasy novels I have ever laid eyes on. Seriously.

If you were even inclined with the slightest hint of interest in the movie, then you would be amazed at the wonder that the book holds. Every question you could imagine about the inner workings of imagination can be answered in the pages of The NeverEnding Story. It’s like reading a history book of childhood. It even answers the question as to why it is called The NeverEnding Story.

The Book Was Better: The Other Boleyn Girl

March 6th, 2008

Hollywood has gotten me to the point where if a book-based movie is coming out, I will go out of my way not to read the book prior to seeing the film. Too many times, I viewed a trailer for a book I’d heard of, run out to read it, and then hated the movie with passion because, as the old saying goes, the book was better.

So about a year or two ago, I decided, no more. If a book-based movie is on the way, I watch the movie. I enjoy the movie. Then I read the book and adore that story even more. I win twice. Hollywood occasionally likes to ruin my plan, however, and waits until after I’ve read a book by my own free will before announcing their intentions. And there I am, stuck enjoying a perfectly good book, and feeling obligated to give the movie a try, because the story was good, and Hollywood can’t possibly butcher a great plot when it’s already laid out for them, right? Right? Well, sometimes I am slightly disappointed with the way the film turns out. Sometimes I’m bitterly disappointed. Sometimes, I’m somewhere in between. Like with The Other Boleyn Girl.
